March News

Spring officially starts this month.  Can you believe it's already here?  Does that mean spring showers as well?  Seems like it hasn't stopped raining since October!  This has been one of the wettest winters I can remember.  It has made course maintenance challenging to say the least.  You may have noticed that we've been spraying the courses to eradicate winter weeds and you may have also noticed that we have left some tire tracks on the courses as well.  Even though it's really too wet for travel in some areas, it is a necessity for us to get these pre-emergent herbicide barriers into the upper soil surface to intercept spring and summer developing weed seedlings.  We will continue spraying as long as Mother Nature will allow.
This winter has been so wet that even people walking across fairways are leaving ruts!  We have had some rollers out on the courses to try and smooth out some of these areas, but soil moisture has to be just right in order for this to work properly.  I would imagine you will see more of this on into the spring, so please be patient with the crew members in the fairways working.
HELPFULL HOME TIDBITS!
For those of you that didn't apply a fall pre-emerge to your landscape.  You may have a problem with winter annual weeds.  Now is the time to think about what you're going to do with them.  Use post emerge herbicides and also apply pre-emergent herbicides for summer annual weeds.  Weed and feed should not be used now.  It is still too early for high nitrogen fertilizers, but if you can find a weed and feed with an analysis of 5-5-20 you should be safe.  However, now is the time to fertilize shade trees.  Be sure and follow label directions!  Also, a fresh dressing of pine straw or mulch should brighten up your landscape.  Any questions you have, I would be happy to help!
